The story behind this experience

Why this experience exists.

This experience was born of an encounter. Aminata cooks at home, with no menu and no strict timetable — to the rhythm of the market and the tide. First you follow her between the stalls, listening to what the women say to one another, choosing the fish together. Back in her courtyard, you peel, you laugh, you taste. Finally you take your seat at her table, facing the Atlantic. This is not a cookery class: it is a slice of life she agrees to share.

What travellers will feel: an unusual slowness, a rare closeness to a place and its people, and that deep sense of having been truly welcomed, not merely received.

What you will experience

An experience told in three movements.

The market wakes up
01 · Before

The market wakes up

At dawn, you meet Aminata beneath the mango trees of the market. You listen to the sellers bargaining, learn to choose a grouper by eye and a mango by its scent. Nothing has started yet — and yet everything is already under way.

Atmosphere

Scents of ginger, cheerful calls, the soft blue of morning.

02 · During

The courtyard, the hands, the fire

In Aminata's courtyard, you peel side by side. She talks about her mother, her neighbourhood, the recipes she refuses to write down. The rice simmers, the fish stews gently. You lose track of time.

Atmosphere

Warmth of the fire, laughter, a radio in the background, the scent of tamarind.

The table, facing the Atlantic

You sit down. You eat with your hand from the shared dish. The bissap and coffee arrive. Silences become companionable. You leave with a little book of recipes — and a longing to come back.

Atmosphere

West wind, children singing in the distance, golden light.

The inspiration notebook

What there's no time to tell — but what makes the journey.

This page sells nothing. It extends, it sheds light, it accompanies. Anecdotes, traditions, gestures, sounds.

Anecdote

Aminata's radio

She always cooks with the same station on — the one that plays morning mbalax. A way of bringing the city into her kitchen.

Tradition

Tea in three rounds

Bitter like life, gentle like love, sweet like death: three glasses shared without hurrying.

Custom

The right hand

Eating from the shared dish is an act of hospitality. It speaks of equality between guests.

Gastronomy

Thieboudienne

Senegal's national dish, inscribed on UNESCO's intangible heritage list. Every cook has her own version — Aminata's has tamarind.

Music

Mbalax

Born in Dakar in the 1970s, this festive music accompanies weddings, naming ceremonies and kitchens alike.

History

Ngor, a fishing village

Long set apart from Dakar, Ngor has kept its village identity. The founding families are still recognised today.

Culture

Teranga

An untranslatable Wolof word — something between hospitality, generosity and the art of welcoming. It is the very fabric of this experience.
